My New Obsession

So this isn't really a new thing that I like but lately it has become an obsession. I have always been drawn to movies that are adapted from novels that take place in the early twentieth or nineteenth century. Most of these movies are put on by A&E or the BBC, but I usually catch them on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre. The costumes are so wonderful and the properness of all the characters and everyone is so beautiful. Usually the heroine always gets her man (who of course is the most good looking one of the bunch) as long as she is good hearted and kind. They usually are around six hours long and it is so painful to stop the movie in the middle because its time to go to bed. When I do have time I can easily sit through one.

I think their addictive nature comes from them being almost like mini soap operas. Some of them are really like soap operas. Obsession with money, falling in love with someone you can't have, envy, unhappy marriages, divorce, runaway loves, affairs. Most of these movies portray one if not all of these qualities. I used to love soap operas too while I grew up so its not so unnatural for me to love this stuff.

But I digress, the fact that they are like soap operas should in no way deter anyone from seeing these movies. They are exceptionally well acted and you find yourself wishing to be the heroine who gets the guy or the guy who gets the girl.

My most recent acquisition is The Buccaneers which you can see a picture of in my sidebar. I first saw this movie years ago on PBS and have always remembered it. I couldn't ever find it to buy anywhere even on VHS and then recently I didn't really want to buy VHS of anything (I was so close to making an exception for this movie) and it didn't look like this movie was coming out on dvd anytime soon. But thanks to the many other fans who love this movie and petitioned who ever is in charge to get it done and so now it has been added to my great collection. I'm so happy! (cheesy grin) And ever since my becoming a member of Netflix I am going to see many many more of these wonderful movies. Here are a few of my favorits if you wish to check them out:

This one by far trumps them all!

Additional Feature

Okay well, I know I am the epitomy of stealing ideas for blogs, but I don't care. So I am stealing from my cousin the idea of posting photos that I have taken on my blog. Photos that I really like. Though my cousin's photos are way better than mine and I haven't taken very many for artistic purposes for a while I still think it would be fun. I've always thought photography was cool and fun. I want to get a better digital camera to take some really good photos but right now if I want to be artistic I use my film camera that has a really nice lens and features.

I was walking around Temple Square one day after running an errand for work and I had brought my digital camera so I could take pictures from the top of the Church Office Building. Most of those didn't really turn out (mainly because my digital camera is a cheapo. Here are a couple that I like, particularly the one of the Temple straight on with a girl sitting on the edge of the fountain and the ominous clouds in the background.

Look you can see spirit prison above the valley!

I might need to photoshop this one a bit to get some more contrast but its still kind of nice.

So my dear cousin you have inspired me to get back into photography. Thanks.

To Support Or Not To Support

I was recently asked by a friend of mine why I don't go to church things anymore (other than church). To which I replied, first of all last month I didn't go because it was the I'm depressed and don't want to do anything or see anybody month. Second of all the most recent activities haven't been anything I have wanted to do. My roommate likes to use the argument (or guilt trip, however you want to see it) that we should support each other in our ward callings. I don't really agree with that because I don't think that I should have to subject myself to a night of misery to support someone who couldn't come up with something better. You gotta know that if you have a calling where you will be planning activities you need to plan things that will peak people's interests. Most people could probably guess what activities would not do this. Now not all activities will peak everyone's interests so you get varied amounts of people each week. My ward usually does a good job. There have been rare occasions where I have not wanted to attend. The whole point of these activities is just to get to know other people. Well, if you feel there isn't anyone there that you need to know well than to each is own. Also, something that a lovely young lady told me was that it is not a requirement to attend all activities in order to go to the temple.
Sometimes your life won't allow you to attend. Especially if there is an activity several times a week. They can be exhausting. Constantly having to come up with interesting conversations with people you talk to sporadically and the ever present worry of looking okay in case there is a new guy present. Also, I guess I'm tired of perhaps being looked down upon because I don't go to every activity that is presented to me. Its my life or your life and if you feel that not going to an activity now and then or never is okay because you have better or more important things to do with your time then more power to you.

So to those who agree with my roommate I hope you have a good time at your numerous functions. To those who don't have a blast creating your own fun. Tirade concluded.

New Evidence of the Curse

So here is an update to the previous post. On my way out to visit my mother in my hometown my tire blew out 30 minutes before I would have reached the town. Fortunately a nice couple stopped and the husband changed my tire for me. The donut only lasted to my house because that was flat also. Went through many hassles and lots of moolah (thanks mom) to fix it but it all came out all right. Except now my car has this grease/maybe gas smell in it. Which just showed up last night. I hope it goes away soon. So I'll just tack this onto the list of mishaps with this car.
