I went back to my ward for the first time in about a month last week, (the absence was due to various traveling and conference). I'm beginning to get annoyed with the topics that my bishopric is giving to perspective speakers. Lately they have had a series going of talking about a particular hymn. There are usually two speakers who talk on the same hymn and then the last speaker talks on something else. I usually will read my scriptures through the first two talks, unless someone is somewhat animated, then when the third speakers gets up I'll usually tune in to see what pearls of wisdom might come forth. I don't know why but I hate the talks on hymns. I just think it is too easy and doesn't really allow for the speaker or listener to learn anything knew.
For my first Sunday back the hymn talks were put on hold and the speakers were told to talk on a a talk from the recent General Conference. Am I the only one that thinks this is ridiculous. What else could someone add to what has already been said? Okay there could be something. But to talk on a talk? I'm pretty sure that whatever was needed to be said in that talk was said and by a General Authority no less. I don't need a recap and if I did I could find the original online or in the upcoming Ensign. Anyway something that has just been bothering me.
In other news.....
I saw a bird get hit by a car yesterday. No, not run over, hit. It was in mid-flight. It was kind of an odd occurrence for me. I noticed the bird was flying very low and a bit erratic like maybe it had been injured a little. Then I saw the car hit it and a burst of feathers. Though it was sad and I gave it my most heartfelt "awww, poor thing" it seemed a little funny to me. Just the image really of the burst of feathers like when a cartoon bird gets hit by something. I guess T.V. really can desensitize you.

Hmmm, sorry to hear that the sacrament talks are unfulfilling. One thought though, my guess as to the reason for the talk on the General Conference talk...they might be trying to reach the people who don't watch General Conference, look it up online, or read it in the Ensign. That was a general thought and was not directed at any one or meant to be taken offensively. I wouldn't judge anyway considering I've listened to only one session so far. :)
I think it's strange to use recent General Session talks since they are used for the 4th Sunday RS/Priesthood lessons. Those are supposed to be disucssions so I like using them. Last week, a speaker was assigned an GC talk and he read the whole thing because he didn't feel like he could add anything to it. I think he was really nervous about speaking in Sacrament meeting. But, yeah, I read my scriptures through that. I could see using a hymn as source of a topic but ... hmmmm.
I didn't mind the hymn talks at first but then they just kept coming and coming. It just shows an easy way out for the bishopric.
Aly, I have listened to most of the talks now. I skipped some that didn't seem interesting me, but I have listened to the majority. I'm sure if I hadn't I would have enjoyed the talk but I bet most people in my ward had watched GC so it was all a recap.
Yeah the hymn-talk overload would get kinda annoying.
Poor birdy.
