Well, it's over. Loralee is married and I have done my first wedding cake. It actually turned out okay, but still it could have been a little nicer.
This is the top tier for David. It is a triple chocolate fudge cake with a dark chocolate ganache filling.
I had to make four double batches of rice krispies for the bottom layer to get it to the right height. Melting marshmallows takes forever. In the middle of making this tier, mom stopped by and then I needed to go to Costco with Loralee to buy the food for the next day. Thursday night my car had broken down near my work so I was able with the help of my friend Jason to get it to my work's parking garage. So after Costco, mom drove me over so we could meet the tow truck guy to take my car to the mechanic. There was an interesting mix-up but it's too long to go into right now. Anyway that was two and half hours away from the cake adding a little stress.
Here is the finished rice krispie treat tower. 12x12x6.
Here's all three tiers with a crumb coating of icing ready to be covered in fondant. I called Carrie over to help me lift the fondant onto the bottom layer. It was rolled out a little thin so it cracked a little but not too overly noticeable. After all three tiers were covered in fondant I noticed the middle layer was shorter than it was supposed to be. It should have been the same height as the top tier. I almost decided to forget about it but I knew it would look dumb with the ribbon so I asked Carrie to take me to Walmart (remember no car, so not a good time for this) to buy some cake boards which I cut up and stacked underneath to get it to the right height then Carrie iced over the cardboard so you couldn't even tell. The middle layer was a simple white cake with raspberry filling and it was the tier they cut into.
Again I solicited Carrie's help with the stenciling. She did so much to help me with this part. She always came up with a solution for a problem. These pictures were taken at about 12:45 that night. And I look a little scary, don't I?
After we finished all the stenciling, I left the rest to be done the next day, meaning the piping of dots for detail, adding ribbon and assembling the cake together. Carrie drove me and the cakes over to the reception hall and helped me unload them all. So sweet.
Ta Da! The finished cake! I had Loralee do the cake topper because she knows how to arrange things like that. She seemed to be really happy with it though there were definite mistakes.
I think if you click on the picture you can see it bigger and get a better idea of what the stencil looks like. This night was actually a pretty good ego boost for me. Loralee told practically everyone that I did the cake and for her centerpieces she had various photos from the engagement sessions on the table which she gave me credit for too. So every couple of minutes people I know would come find me and tell me how good I did on both. It was really nice to hear. I made sure to give Loralee the credit for the photo editing. And since I was so worried about the cake I welcomed all compliments on that as well. I might have gotten a teensy bit braggy toward the end, but I tired to reign myself in.
I'll have more pics from wedding later on this week. I shot most of the temple stuff and the reception with my friend Jason's super duper nice camera with an amazing lens. He was the videographer. So he has to get it onto a dvd and I'll pick the pictures I want.

Great Job Cassie! So are you doing a castle Cake next weekend for my daughters birthday party or what?
Wow! I think it looks totally professional - even when I clicked on it and got a closer look! Seriously, you should be mega proud of yourself and all the work you did.
Have you ever considered doing this as a career?
Great - now I'm craving cake AND rice krispy treats! Good thing I'm grocery shopping tonight.
Missed you at the reunion, but I'm glad the wedding went well!
It turned out beautifully! Very elegant looking. It's nice when you put so much thought and effort into a project for it to turn out great.
I think it is wonderful. I'm trying to think of a reason for you to make me a cake. If you decide to decorate cakes for a living, you'd better get over the stress. Anyway, Loralee is lucky to have you for a friend. You did so much for her.
Wow. That is really good. I am in awe.
yeah Cassie, that cake is awesome!
I looks great!! I love the stenciling and the ribbon! Awesome job!
Oh Cassie, it is beautiful! So I'm trying to lose the baby weight, and this post was a little cruel. The chocolate cake made my mouth water! And the marshmallows melting into a divine goo! Anyway the final product was just beautiful.
Thanks everyone!
I just want you to know that this post seriously made me crave rice krispy treats! So much so that when I went grocery shopping last night I bought the stuff to make them. Tonight, I'm going to think of you (blaming you) every bite. :)
In all seriousness, I'm looking forward to enjoying them. Thank you reminding me that I like them so much.
