I think their addictive nature comes from them being almost like mini soap operas. Some of them are really like soap operas. Obsession with money, falling in love with someone you can't have, envy, unhappy marriages, divorce, runaway loves, affairs. Most of these movies portray one if not all of these qualities. I used to love soap operas too while I grew up so its not so unnatural for me to love this stuff.
But I digress, the fact that they are like soap operas should in no way deter anyone from seeing these movies. They are exceptionally well acted and you find yourself wishing to be the heroine who gets the guy or the guy who gets the girl.
My most recent acquisition is The Buccaneers which you can see a picture of in my sidebar. I first saw this movie years ago on PBS and have always remembered it. I couldn't ever find it to buy anywhere even on VHS and then recently I didn't really want to buy VHS of anything (I was so close to making an exception for this movie) and it didn't look like this movie was coming out on dvd anytime soon. But thanks to the many other fans who love this movie and petitioned who ever is in charge to get it done and so now it has been added to my great collection. I'm so happy! (cheesy grin) And ever since my becoming a member of Netflix I am going to see many many more of these wonderful movies. Here are a few of my favorits if you wish to check them out:

You'll have to tell me what the others were since my computer seems unable to download photos. I didn't know you were hooked on soaps. What's wrong with your mother?
They are the Forsyte Saga, Ivanhoe and Persuasion. I'm not hooked on soaps. I used to like to watch Days of Our Lives and occasionally Young and the Restless or One Life to Live
I just started a blog so I could comment on Myke's. What a pain. I can't even put a photo on it. So I will probably never go into it again and forget what I named everything. Too much work for me. And I forgot what I wanted to say to Myke. The photos you posted came up this time. Buccaneers looks good. I'll have to borrow it sometime.
I love Pride & Prejudice. We have about four copies in our house right now. That's more than the number of people who live here!
I also like Persuasion. I know it's not A&E, but what did you think about Mansfield Park?
I didn't really like Mansfield Park because I had read the book and I think the way they portrayed the lead character in the movie was very different than in the book and it really bugged me. I probably would have liked it if I hadn't read the book.
Another title to add to the list is North and South which I haven't seen all the way through but I just started this weekend and it is looking promising. It has that pride and prejudice feel where the main guy is hard and kind of mean but falls in love with the lead girl who right now kind of despises him. I just watched the part where he proposes and is immediately rebuffed and it ends in a fight. Extremely similar, which is why I like it.
I felt the exact same way about Mansfield Park! I really enjoyed the book, so I was disappointed with the movie portrayal.
I watched most of The Forsyte Saga on PBS a couple months ago, but I missed the last "episode"! I'll have to borrow it from you sometime so I can see how it ends.
My roommate has a series I think you'd like - it's similar to P&P - called Wives and Daughters. Maybe someday she'll let you borrow it.
Aly mentioned you may come down to Cedar this weekend! I hope so!! If you do, you can stay at my apartment, if you want.
Aly and I watched Pride and Prejudice this weekend. I'm almost finished reading the book, but Aly couldn't wait for me to finish to watch the movie. In this case it's been nice to read and watch in such close proximity. Totally loved both the book and the movie - it was the A&E version. Hard to believe, but until now I didn't even know the storyline.
We were at the library tonight trying to find a audio book to listen to on our way to Cedar City. Cassie, when you mentioned Edith Wharton I thought that would be one we could all enjoy, but, wouldn't you know it, our library has nothing, written or audio, by Wharton.
If anyone's listened to a good audio book I would love a recommendation.
Hey, Framed! Who framed you? I keep checking your site for a post.
I don't want to do a posting. I just wanted to comment. Maybe I was bored. And it said it would be easy. I should have known by all the lists of help topics. I'm sure there all kinds of deep hidden reason why I chose Framed, but I'm not going there. (Actually, I was looking at my latest project which is a wall full of pictures in black frames. A third of the frames are empty and they are all leaning against the wall on the floor in my living room. May I could do a post about that, but no I have a RS lesson to prepare. Oh, the irony.) More irony. I can't remember my password so I will have to go back to my other identity and will probably never see my blog again. I can't remember how to get there anyway.
This is your blog. If you forget your password, I think that they can e-mail it to you.

Julie, I don't own the Forsyte Saga I had just watched it on PBS too and thought it was really good. I want to watch that Wives and Daughters movie. I was going to rent it from Netflix but they don't have it. Blockbuster online did but I have quit them. Man, you just can't have it all. Maybe she'll let me borrow it and I could bring it back down when I come for Shakespeare or when you come visit me again since it will be your turn after this weekend.
Framed: you are hopeless. that's all I gotta say but I still love you.
booklogged that is a good idea about the audio book. I should totally go do get one too.
Thanks, Cardine. I found out that it was the user name I had wrong. I have two, etc., etc. Anyway, one of these days I will do a post but I think somone should come home for Mothers Day and show me some tricks.
I was just there! If I'm going to go to Europe I can't make all these small trips. Besides I'm going to Cedar this weekend.
Not that I wouldn't love to see you on Mother's Day. I'm sure I'll give you a call....If I remember (:
Loved Pride and Prejudice, both the book and the A&E movie version. Although, I have to say that I loved the ending more in the book. I don't know exactly why, but I just thought it was better. I did fall in love with Mr. Darcy in both though. Somewhere in the beginning my mom said, "I'm still trying to figure out how this guy is going to become such a wonderful guy that you & C & J are all in love with him." Sometime after they arrived at Pemberly I asked her if she didn't love hime yet, and she said yes. What a wonderful story!!!
